With a 2010 census population of 375,770, Pinal County is the third largest county in Arizona. The county was carved from pieces of Maricopa and Pima County in 1875.
The name "pinal" may refer to pine trees or the Pinal branch of the Apache Indian tribe.
Pinal County was primarily an agricultural area up into the 1980s. The county is currently experiencing rapid growth as suburban sprawl moves in from Phoenix to the North and Tucson to the South. The 2010 population is almost 4 times the 1990 population of 90,918.
